Sylvia: Hi Chef D: Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to interview with me. Please tell us about yourself and your business?
Chef D: Hi Sylvia. My name is Chef Donald Smith, and I’m a restaurateur, author, mentor, businessman, Award winning Chef and an Ambassador for Louisiana’s, National Black Chef Association. I’m a proud African American Chef. My business name is Chef D Services, under this umbrella is my spice line “Yes Chef”, published cookbook.
I’m the Executive Chef at Rolling Hills Country Club; and the Executive Catering Chef at The Plantation Venue both are in Arkansas. Also travel the world an catering our slogan “Where New Orleans meets the World” .
Sylvia: What does success mean to you?
Chef D: I believe success is defined by who you are and the person you aspire to be. In my life, success are the goals I accomplished; and steps taken to accomplish them.
Sylvia: How do you create work-life balance?
Chef D: The ability to make choices between work & life equally. Work-Life balance is an ongoing process where we choose how to invest our energy, so that work and life don’t compete; but work in perfect harmony.
Sylvia: What steps are necessary for an entrepreneur who wants to move his/her business to the next level?
Chef D: In my opinion, it’s important to set SMART goals; to focus on the customer’s experience; and continually learn new techniques. I also believe in delegating tasks which improves productivity.
Sylvia: It is important to give back. In what way do you give back to your community?
Chef D: I work at the local food bank and I feed the homeless. I also feed the Frontline worker. In addition, I have worked with different youth groups. I also enjoy mentoring young inspiring chefs. I dress young men for there Sr. Prom
Sylvia: That’s awesome volunteer work. What challenges and opportunities do you see in the present economic environment?
Chef D: In today’s environment as A Chef, you have to be very creative. The big challenge is Consistency, Perfection, Profit and Time.
Sylvia: How do you promote/market your business?
Chef D: Social media; guest appearances on various podcasts; blog interviews; some radio and word of mouth.
Sylvia: What books and resources would you recommend to other people in business?
Sylvia: What advice do you have for new busines owner who are just starting out?
Chef D: Keep a positive attitude, engage and stimulate self learning. Be willing to accept positive feedback from people. Also, focus on strengths and not weaknesses.
Sylvia: How do you stay connected in mind, body and spirit?
Chef D: We need to look after our mental health to maintain focus and clarity of the mind. It’s important to develop positive relationships and genuine connection to nourish our spiritual and emotional health.
